What is Microsoft Flip?
Microsoft Flip (formerly “Flipgrid”), commonly referred to as “Flip,” is a video discussion board tool for engaging your students through video-based social learning. It allows you to create discussion topics and prompts to which students can respond with short video recordings. There is no cost for faculty or students to use Flip.
Possible Flip use cases
- Introductions: At the start of a semester, have your students record a video introduction of themselves, and encourage them to comment on their classmates recordings to build community.
- Discussions: Use Flip to facilitate class discussions. Students can post their responses, comment on each other's videos, and reply to each other’s videos.
- Consider a pre-class discussion or a post-class follow-up discussion
- Reflections: Have your students use Flip to create video journals to reflect on their course experiences and personal growth over the semester.
- Presentations: Use Flip for student presentations. This allows students to practice public speaking and virtual presentation skills. Using the built-in response features, students can provide peer reviews on other presentations to practice critical thinking and evaluative skills.
- Language learning: Use Flip in language courses to practice speaking and comprehension skills. Have students record themselves speaking in the language for pronunciation exercises.
- Group project updates: Have teams share progress, discuss challenges, and collaborate on solutions using Flip. Encourage groups to host brainstorming sessions within a Flip topic to encourage collaboration and creativity.
- Guest lectures: Encourage students to record themselves asking questions for guest lecturers in your course using Flip.
- Career development: Use Flip for career development on assignments, like interviewing skills practice.
- Instructor feedback: Use Flip to provide your students with feedback on assignments and projects.

Best practices
Keep these best practices in mind when you integrate Flip in to your course:
Provide Clear Instructions: Provide clear and concise instructions for each topic. Include what you expect in the responses, the length of the video, and the deadline.
Use Engaging Prompts: Use open-ended questions that encourage your students to think critically and reflect. Consider encouraging the use of a background or other effects built in to the Flip camera.
Model Participation: Record your own video responses to “break the ice” and show the kind of responses you’re looking for from your students.
Give Feedback: Provide timely and constructive feedback to your students to keep them motivated and engaged.
Set Privacy Settings: Adjust the privacy settings within Flip to ensure a safe environment for your students to share, or set permissions to submit videos to educator only (not viewable by other students).
