Our extra credit guides provide you with a number of different strategies that you can use to award extra credit in your Canvas course. Overall, we recommend choosing the method that aligns with how often you’ll give extra credit and how visible or impactful you want it to be.
In all cases, keep equity in mind. Extra credit may not be equitable to all students, depending on how it’s implemented in your course, and more equitable methods may require more time spent grading.
In brief, if you want to…
- Lessen the impact of negative scores across course: Drop assignments from an assignment group, or excuse a low-score assignment.
- Have the quickest additive impact across course: Use the Override column at the end of the term & track via no submission assignment (don’t count towards final grade, or 0% weight).
- Lessen the impact of negative score on specific assignments: Directly override a student’s grade, or award more points on rubric.
- Lessen the impact of negative quiz scores (“drop questions”):
- Auto-grading: Adjust total points after submission but before posting grades.
- Manual grading: Zero-point extra credit questions with grade >0, or fudge points for incorrect question scores or extra credit.
- Incentivize bonus assignments (total points): Create a zero-point extra credit assignment with grade > 0.
