Strategy 1: Use the Override Column in the Grades Area
- Enable Override Column, then enter their adjusted final grade.
- Give students the extra credit in the override column when grades are due.
- Pros: Easiest method, works with grade passback
- Cons: Doesn’t affect running total for final grade, and you must manually adjust grade for each affected student. Students will need to know to add whatever extra credit is to their total while the course is in progress.
Strategy 2: Override Grade in Self-Service (or grade passback tool)
- If entering grades directly in self-service, put in their adjusted grade there.
- If using the grade passback feature in Canvas, you can adjust the grade before sending to Self-Service
- Pros: Easy
- Cons: Doesn’t affect running total for final grade, and you must manually adjust grade for each affected student. Students will need to know to add whatever extra credit is to their total while the course is in progress.
Strategy 3: Override Grade in Canvas Gradebook
- Change their grade to be higher in the gradebook for an assignment, quiz or discussion
- Pros: Quick
- Cons: Manually adjust grade for each affected student. Not obvious that grade was adjusted (can check gradebook history)
