Strategy 1: Adjust Total Quiz Points After Submission
- Any extra credit questions should be worth a point value (1, 2, etc.). Once all students are graded and no attempts are left, go to “Edit Assignment Settings” for the quiz, and reduce total points by the point values for extra credit questions.
- Student’s grade point value stays the same, but possible points are reduced, effectively increasing their score.
- Pros: Equitable, can be used to “drop” questions, and works well with auto-graded quizzes.
- Cons: Need to wait until all quizzes are submitted and no attempts left, allows for grades higher than 100% - need to edit grade in gradebook to fix.
Strategy 2: Award “Fudge Points” on a Quiz Submission
- Fudge points in SpeedGrader allow you to add or subtract points from a student’s quiz grade.
- Pros: Can simulate “dropping questions” by giving fudge points for questions they got wrong equal to lost points, or to add extra credit for a specific student.
- Cons: Not good for auto-graded quizzes due to time commitment. Must determine point values to add for each student. Not always clear why fudge points were added (can add comment).
Strategy 3: Zero-Point Questions with Grade > Zero
- Make a quiz question worth zero points, and, in SpeedGrader, grade question > 0 if the student got it right.
- Pros: Works well for extra credit essay questions.
- Cons: Requires building the quiz with specific extra credit questions in mind. Does not work well for auto-graded quizzes as it requires manual grading.
