When a faculty or staff member uploads a video to YuJa, it should automatically receive captions. Captions are required on all videos:
1. The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requires institutions, including private universities like Quinnipiac, to provide equal access to all students, including those with disabilities. Captions on video content make the video accessible to individuals with hearing impairments.
2. Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act mandates any program receiving federal funding, like Quinnipiac, provide accommodations for students with disabilities. Captions on video content are a form of accommodation for individuals with hearing impairments.
3. In summary, Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act mandates that videos be accessible to individuals with disabilities. This includes using captions to ensure that online content is accessible.
Captions also promote inclusivity by making video content accessible to a wider range of individuals, including those with learning differences, non-native English speakers, or those who generally benefit from reading along with audio content.
Sometimes, a video recorded within YuJa, uploaded to YuJa, and/or processed through the YuJa web editor by a faculty or staff member may not automatically receive captions.
Note: There can be a delay between publishing your video and caption generation.
To send a video for computer-generated captioning, follow the steps below.
- Hover your mouse over the video in your YuJa library that you want to be captioned, and select “More…”
- Under “Accessibility,” select “Auto Caption” and then “Save Accessibility” at the bottom of the window.
While captions are being processed on the video, you will see this:
Once captions have been generated, they will be available to turn on using the “CC” button in the YuJa media player.
