Easy steps for making sure your Blackboard Tests and Pools import to Canvas correctly.
If you have Blackboard Tests and Pools, and import them into Canvas, they will import as classic quizzes and question banks. Our Canvas environment does not support classic quizzes and item banks, rather, we are set up to support the new, modern New Quizzes and Item Banks features of Canvas.
This guide will explain how to work in a sandbox course first, then copy the sandbox into your course of record. The benefit to working in the sandbox course first, is Canvas will automatically convert the classic quizzes to new quizzes, and question banks to item banks.
If you had question sets in your Blackboard tests, these will be migrated into Item Banks using this method. These are duplicate questions and can be safely deleted, but you will need to re-attach the item banks to your new quiz to replace them.
- Export your course from Blackboard, making sure to include the “Tests, Surveys, and Pools” option.
- Import the ZIP file from Blackboard into a Canvas sandbox.
- Once the import completes, copy the sandbox into your course of record shell or into another Canvas sandbox if you are designing your course in one.

Your Blackboard quizzes are now in the correct format, and your pools are now item banks. You can safely delete any “question set” item banks from the item banks area of your Canvas course (accessible by going to Settings, “Navigation,” and enabling “Item Banks” in the navigation) as these are essentially duplicates of the questions you pulled from the pools. Then, remake your quizzes and add the new item banks via the folder icon. You can try editing the old quizzes, but there may be errors from the erroneous question sets.
