Overview
A Sandbox is a private Canvas course designed for course development and experimentation. Unlike a Course of Record, a Sandbox does not contain student enrollments and is not connected to the university's registration system. Sandbox courses provide a safe environment where you can build course materials, learn Canvas features, test new tools, and experiment without affecting a live course.
Common Use Cases
- Build a new course before the semester begins.
- Practice using Canvas tools and features.
- Test assignments, discussions, quizzes, and modules.
- Organize and revise course materials.
- Explore integrations and new instructional technologies.
- Prepare content that can later be copied into a Course of Record. Instructions for copying content in Canvas can be found here →
Because there are no students enrolled, think of a Sandbox as your workshop. You can freely experiment, make mistakes, and revise your course as often as needed.
