Team-Based Learning

Team-based learning can help online students:

• Engage with course materials before collaborative activities.
• Check their individual understanding of important concepts.
• Learn from the perspectives and reasoning of their peers.
• Apply course concepts to authentic problems and scenarios.
• Develop communication, collaboration, and decision-making skills.
• Build connections with classmates throughout the course.

Online team-based learning generally follows three stages:

For online courses, clear structure is especially important. Provide students with specific deadlines and expectations for each stage so they know when individual work ends and team collaboration begins.

Keep teams consistent when possible so students have time to establish working relationships. For asynchronous activities, allow enough time for students to contribute without requiring everyone to be online simultaneously.
