Designing Effective Slideshow Presentations

Well-designed slides can help students:

• Identify important concepts and takeaways.
• Follow the organization of a lesson.
• Make connections between ideas.
• Engage with visual examples and explanations.
• Review course content after class.

Aim to communicate one main idea or concept per slide. When a topic requires significant explanation, consider breaking it across several slides rather than placing too much information on one slide.

Use concise text to highlight key ideas, terms, questions, or takeaways. Additional explanation can be provided during instruction or through other course materials.

A consistent structure makes slides easier for students to navigate and understand. Consider using:

• Consistent fonts, headings, and layouts.
• Clear titles that describe the purpose of each slide.
• Sufficient spacing between elements.
• Simple backgrounds that do not compete with the content.
• A clear visual hierarchy to distinguish headings from supporting information.

Images, diagrams, charts, and other visuals can help explain complex concepts and provide additional ways for students to engage with information.

Choose visuals that support or clarify the learning content rather than using images primarily for decoration. When including charts or diagrams, make sure students understand what they should notice or take away from the visual.

Slides do not have to be used only to present information. Consider incorporating:

• Reflection questions.
• Discussion prompts.
• Short scenarios or examples.
• Knowledge checks.
• Opportunities to apply a concept.
• Brief pauses for students to summarize or connect ideas.

These activities can help students actively work with course content rather than simply receive information.

When creating slides, consider how students with different needs will access the information. Use:

• Readable font sizes.
• Strong color contrast.
• Descriptive link text.
• Alt text for meaningful images.
• Clear and consistent layouts.
• More than color alone to communicate meaning.

Avoid placing essential information only within images or other visual elements.

Students may return to a slideshow when studying, completing assignments, or reviewing a lesson. Before sharing your slides, consider whether students can identify the main ideas and relationships between concepts without needing to reconstruct the entire lecture.

Think of your slideshow as a learning aid rather than a lecture script. Slides should guide students' attention, reinforce important concepts, and complement the explanations, examples, and interactions you provide as the instructor.
