Courses are created in Canvas and assigned the dates of the term automatically. Students retain access to courses for up to one year after the term ends, however, due dates within courses cannot be set outside of the term dates, and students cannot submit to assignments, discussions, or quizzes within the course after the term ends.
If you need to set a due date outside of the term dates, or need students to submit within the course after the term ends, go to the Settings area of your course (1) in the course navigation. Under the Course Details tab, change the Participation to be “Course” (2), and then adjust the dates (3). Make sure to click the blue “Update Course Details” button (4) to save your changes.

After the “End” date and time passes:
- Students can still access content and review existing submissions to assignments, discussions, and quizzes (if permitted by the quiz settings) within the course.
- If a student tries to submit an assignment, they will see this message:
- If a student tries to begin a new quiz submission, they will see this message:
- The “Reply” options in discussions will be hidden for the prompt and on the existing replies.

If you need students to submit within the course, you will need to adjust the “End” date following the steps shown above.
Remember to change Participation back to “Term” (2) when the course is complete and student submissions are no longer needed.
