What Is a Learning Objective?
A learning objective is a clear, measurable statement describing what students should be able to know, demonstrate, or perform after completing a course or module. Effective learning objectives answer the question: "What should students be able to do after completing this learning experience?" Rather than describing what the instructor will teach, learning objectives focus on what students will accomplish.
Learning objectives can be used at the course-level (broad, overarching goals and outcomes) and the module-level (more targeted and specific to the week or topic).
Examples of Strong Learning Objectives:
By the end of this module, students will be able to:
- Develop a comprehensive patient education plan for individuals with diabetes.
- Analyze patient assessment data to identify priority nursing interventions.
- Evaluate ethical considerations when implementing artificial intelligence in healthcare.
- Design an evidence-based treatment plan using current clinical guidelines.
- Compare competing theories related to organizational leadership.

Effective learning objectives often follow the SMART framework.
SMART Term | Description |
Specific | Focus on a clearly defined skill or competency. |
Measurable | Can be evaluated through an assignment, discussion, project, quiz, or performance. |
Attainable | Are realistic given the course level and available learning time. |
Relevant | Support the overall course outcomes and program goals. |
Time-Bound | Specify when students should achieve the objective (typically by the end of a module or course). |
Learning Objectives vs. Learning Activities
One of the most common instructional design mistakes is confusing learning activities with learning objectives.
Learning Activity
A learning activity describes what students will do during the course.
Learning Objective
A learning objective describes what students will be able to do after completing the activity.
Remember: Activities are the process. Learning objectives describe the outcome.
Aligning Objectives, Activities, Assessments and Materials
One of the most important principles of effective course design is alignment. Alignment ensures that your learning objectives, learning activities, and assessments all work together to support student success.
Think of alignment as answering three simple questions:
What should students learn? Learning Objectives
How will they learn it? Learning Activities & Materials
How will they demonstrate their learning? Assessments
When these three components are connected, students clearly understand the purpose of each activity and how it helps them achieve the course outcomes.

Clear learning objectives form the foundation of effective course design. They communicate expectations, guide instructional decisions, and help students understand how each activity contributes to their learning. By writing measurable, student-centered objectives and aligning them with meaningful learning experiences and assessments, instructors create courses that are purposeful, engaging, and easier for students to navigate successfully.
